Wire Comparison Tables
In Australia you will find that Wire and Cable is described in both AWG and mm2. Very confusing!
AWG stands for American Wire Gauge, also called B&S - Brown and Sharpe. It is a measure of wire diameter, the larger the number, the  thinner the wire.
mm2 (millimeters squared) is the area of the wire expressed in square millimeters, the bigger the number, the thicker the wire. These tables refer to solid wire, i.e. one strand. Stranded wire, the most commonly used marine wire, reduces the square area of the wire marginally, but as we are not building space shuttles, it can be ignored. The advantage of stranded wire is that it is flexible, the more strands the more flexible the wire. Stranded wire is specified by the number of strands and the diameter of each strand, so,  " 41/0.3 " is a stranded cable consisting of 41 strands, each with a diameter of 0.3mm.
And the difference between wire and cable?
Wire is single conductor cable.  Cable is very thick wire and cable with more than one core, or conductor is always called cable. But in trade parlance a cable is often called "that wire".
